Are you doing this under Windows or DOS?  The serial ports should support
14.4kbps V.42bis connections without any problems under DOS if you use get
rid of FuelDOS (and any other 'bad' TSRs).  Lots of people have verified
this.  16550 doesn't really matter for DOS.  If you're having problems under
DOS at those speeds, get the machine replaced.

The AT&T, new MegaHertz, and Practical Peripherals modems all emulate a
16550.  Does anyone have any others to add to this list?
