PCMCIA Modems / Speeds / US / UK

Everyone,

You keep mentioning PCMCIA modems from Sparco, Megahertz, AT&T, et al but I
seem not to recall the speed at which they operate.  are they all 28.8 or
still 14.4 bps ?

Since prices here in the UK kind of double the ones in the US, I was wondering
if there's any chance of getting a PCMCIA modem and/or 8Mb RAM for my tp750
mono from the US.  Any mail-order companies that do this ?  One can do this
with books, order them from the US, get them in the UK half price!

To someone here in the UK, even if I had to pay VAT and import tax, wouldn't
it STILL be chepaer to get the things from the States ?
