success with 3c589!!
Well, I finally got my 3com card working!! I was having problems
getting my PC-NFS software to talk to the card. It turned out that
the software was too old of a version to be able to work.
I switched to some newer IBM TCP/IP software which supports NDIS
drivers. Interestingly, this software is not listed at all on the
official 3com supported-software fax list. Although the IBM software
doesn't specifically support the 3c589, it does support the 3c509
Etherlink III AT-bus card. I did the install for the 3c509, and then I
manually installed the NDIS driver for the 3c589 (came on 3c589 floppy).
This involved modifying config.sys and protman.ini to use the ELPC3
driver instead of the ELNK3 driver.
I can now do a backup of my TP750 hard drive onto my unix workstation
hard drive, just by doing a DOS xcopy.
My Megahertz modem operation seems to be unaffected by having the 3com
card also installed. I haven't tried to use them both in the same
session, actually this is impossible to do: You can't use the Xjack
with the Ethernet pigtail also installed, because they physically
interfere with each other.
I don't know what's up with 3com, but it seems that I never got billed
for the 3c589 either!!
