Ah, that explains it. Actually, at first, the problem looked worse than it
was, because I had the 1024x768x256 driver installed. When the WfW driver
complained, it tried to write its message in text mode, but that just
garbled the video mode. It then waited for me to press Enter, but I had
no idea it was waiting... anyway, you get the idea.
That might be handy to remember in other cases, too -- if Windows
appears to hang silently at startup, make sure you have the standard VGA
driver installed so you can see any potential driver startup complaints.

What? Waste a whole 28 MB? I don't think so! :-) But actually, my primary
DOS partition is currently only 360 megabytes -- I've set aside the rest
for another operating system. I may try more experiments when I have
time, though.

Well, I called them asking about the 340 MB devices, and they didn't have
any, but said they could get them, so I just asked them if they could
get a 540 MB drive instead. No problem -- they shipped it within a couple
of days of my placing the order. I'm a satisfied customer.
