Warp & SVGA video
This is a follow-up to my previous post regarding Warp and SVGA video.
(Note that this is applicable to all Thinkpads which use the WD90C24
video controller chip.)
Problem:
SVGA video working OK after initial installation of Warp, but becomes
corrupted after BIOS upgrade.
Solution:
Folowing the BIOS upgrade procedure, DO NOT run the Easy Setup System
Diagnostics as indicated in the BIOS upgrade documentation. If for some
reason you need to run the diagnostics, or, as in my case, you have
already done so, you will need to recreate the OS/2 SVGADATA.PMI file.
Explanation:
SVGADATA.PMI is a file OS/2 uses to "capture the state of the video
adapter" (quoting from the Warp User's Guide). Once captured, this file
is used every time the system is started to define certain display
parameters. The User's Guide also mentions that some "video configuration
programs" may wreak havoc with this file, ultimately causing video
corruption. It turns out that the video test subset of the Easy Setup
Diagnostics just so happens to be one of these troublemakers.
P.239 of the User's Guide walks you through the steps necessary to
recreate the SVGADATA.PMI file; however, by avoiding the post BIOS
upgrade diagnostics, you shouldn't need to mess with this.
In short, the BIOS upgrade itself is not to blame for the OS/2 video
corruption; rather, the Easy Setup System Diagnostics are the guilty
party.
Hope this helps someone down the road.......
