Re: Warp & SVGA video

> It sounds like the SVGA problem is solved (more or less).

Yeah, more or less....just be careful with the Easy Setup System
Diagnostics.

> This leaves only the APM problem.

Actually, there is a workaround for the suspend/resume problem: delete
your power-on password. Although I kinda miss the power-on password,
OS/2 allows you to "lock-up" upon system start. This is not as secure
or as convenient as the ROM-based password, but it'll do in the interim.

There is also the familiar "PCMCIA-card-not-recognized-upon-return-from-
hibernation-problem". Workaround: hot-plug the PCMCIA device. This is
too much of a hassle for my tastes, so I've just given up on hibernation.
On the plus side, I've recovered 8Mb of disk space as a result.

> Is the PCMCIA driver support better than the old os/2?

In terms of PCMCIA implementation, I see no difference between what
I get under Warp versus what I had under Windows. Under Warp, it's
called "Plug and Play for PCMCIA", whereas under Windows it's called
"Easy Play", but that's about the only difference. It looks the same,
feels the same, works the same. (Note that the only PCMCIA card I use
is a Megahertz x-jack modem - your mileage may vary, especially with
ethernet cards and the like).

> Is system installation or maintenance a big time sink?

Installation is easy, if not time consuming due to having to shuffle
what seems like half-a-million floppies. Took me about an hour for an
OS/2-only installation; installing Windows support will of course take
longer.

> How is the speed and stability running windows apps?

Right now my setup does not include Windows support, so I can't comment
on running Windows apps. However, I have been running the included
HyperAccess Lite, Win-Cim for OS/2, Fax Works, and some DOS-based stuff.
Overall, the system seems quite snappy and responsive. I came over from
WFWG 3.11 (which fairly well screams), and I don't feel as though I've
lost much in the way of speed. With OS/2 2.1, performance always seemed
to lag that of Windows; but with Warp, performance is pretty much a
non-issue. (I assume that one would see similar results when running
Windows-based apps). As far as stability goes, the system has been
very solid. The only crashes I've had are related to the APM bugs
mentioned above. Contrast this to my DOS/Windows desktop machine, which
crashed three times just yesterday while running Doom ;)

If ID ever delivers on Doom/2, it may very well be the death blow for
DOS on my desktop machine as well....
