decompression programs work in discrete blocks (at least stacker does and so does double space), so you do not lose the whole file if compression goes bad. I wouldn't consider using a program that had this characterstic. Does the one that you are talking about really have this fatal flaw. Data should only be backed up if it cannot be recovered, otherwise why bother. THe issue is whether compression makes it more likely that you have to go through this recovery.
