Andy,
     I can highly recommend Chameleon/NFS.  It is an outstanding package.  I
have been using it with several generations of ThinkPads and have had no
problems.  It combines the TCP/IP protocol stack, SLIP, CSLIP (compressed
SLIP), PPP, as well as NFS. It also comes with a lot of utilities, including
multimedia mail, ftp, ping, finger, printer spoolers...
