the battery alert

Just what does it mean when your battery goes into "alert" mode? I had never
heard the two-tone alert with flashing battery led until about a week ago.
I took out my freshly charged TP, turned it on and it started complaining.
I looked at the fuelgauge which read 8:88 remaining (which is its way of saying
it didn't know). After a while it stopped and the fuel gauage went back to
normal. What was it trying to tell me?
