I recommend getting a Wetsuit (snug fitting neoprene slip case) for
the laptop and putting them both inside whatever carrying case you
want to use to carry your papers and whatnot.  This way you only have
one thing to carry.  The Wetsuit is great when you just want to carry
the laptop -- it protects it, provides a handle and a small bit of
storage space, and (unlike the thinkpad case) is squishy so it won't
slip out of your hands.
