New TP360C User

Hello, all.
I had been looking at notebooks for some time, saw "Microsystems
Warehouse"'s ad for a TP360C for 2K and sprang for it. Paid $19 for
overnite delivery and got it the next day.

Installed Warp yesterday to see how it would do. Ran slowly, of course,
with virtually constant swapping. Marginally acceptable because I really
like Warp. Decided to try a "pure" OS/2 setup with a HPFS filesystem.

Did the install, and had a glitch when install left the HPFS driver
remmed out. Not hard to fix if one is experienced, but a new user would
be baffled. Warp still ran slowly, no evident change from the previous
setup. Installed the IAK and that was too much for my 4MB of RAM, went
into the worse case of "swapfile hell" I have seen. The IAK _did_ run,
mind you, but window switching and such was very, very, very slow.

So Warp will have to wait until I get more RAM. On the plus side,
install recognized my PCMCIA modem and also the Western Digital video
setup. I also thought the appearance on the 640x480 screen was very
good, especially compared to Windows. I will definitely re-instll when I
get more memory.

My TP has 4MB RAM and the 170MB hard disk. More RAM is in the cards, of
course, but I use this machine as a "second" computer and I think the HD
capacity is OK for the time being. But one day I want to install Linux,
and I will probably shop for a bigger HD then also.

Overall I think it is a superb machine. The display is gorgeous and the
machine is laid out very intelligently. The keyboard is very easy for me
to use, although your mileage could vary there due to personal
preferences. About the only gripe I can think of is that the little fold
out feet that elevate the machine don't lock, and you can fold them
accidentally when inserting floppy disks.

Performance is adequate to good. The processor (486SX-33) is slow by
today's standards, but battery life seems really excellent. I personally
don't want a "rocket" CPU if that means battery life is only an hour or two.

Anyody know who sells good RAM cheap????

(Oh, yeah, the IBM thingy works very well)
