Lithium Ion batteries are still not ready for prime-time.

There is a serious problem with the chemical stability in current Lithium Ion
batteries, such as the Sony batteries which Dell uses. These batteries have a
very short life-span, and only a marginally better current density.

Two American companies, including ATT, are developing Lithium Ion batteries
with solid chemical packs. These batteries have lifetimes exceeding Nickel
Metal Hydrides, and 4 times greater current densities.

It's funny that Dell hasn't learned it's lesson from the last time it gambled
on adolescent battery technology. Dell released a notebook several years ago
before NMH was ready for mass production. Back then there were problems with
the electrolyte leaking out of the battery and exploding when it contacted air!
Dell had to pull thousands of laptops off the market, and never released them
until the Sony designed Lattitude.
