What we've all been waiting for
The Pentium upgrade is only for the 755CE/CSE/CD and costs $1149.
Surprisingly the 701 uses a "Super Nicad" instead of NiMH. Also you now
have the option of getting OS2 WARP pre-installed. A lot of caveats with
this model and alot of options won't be available for a few months.
Also this model appears to use only DIMM memory chips, not the DRAM card.
Thats the end of my comments. Josh H.

The ThinkPad(R) 701C and 701CS have a new, unique, full-size notebook
keyboard and display in a compact, 4.5-pound package that doesn't
sacrifice an ounce of power or versatility. The ThinkPad 701C and
701CS systems give you everything you need to meet your business
computing needs when you travel -- anytime, anywhere.
The innovative design of the expandable keyboard enables the
full-size, 85-key TrackWrite keyboard to fit in the 7.9- by 9.7- by
1.7-inch package. The keyboard is cut in half diagonally, so when
you raise the display, the two keyboard halves spread apart, leaving
an overhang of almost an inch on either side of the chassis. In
addition to the TrackWrite keyboard with TrackPoint III, you also
have a choice of color displays -- Active Matrix or Dual Scan. Both
displays have a maximum viewable area of 10.4 inches, measured
diagonally.
With the high performance of the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS systems, you
have more than enough speed and resource to take complex applications
on the road. The systems are available with either an Intel** 486
DX2 microprocessor (50/25MHz) and standard 4MB of memory (expandable
to 20MB), or an Intel 486 DX4 microprocessor (75/25MHz) and standard
8MB of memory (expandable to 24MB).
Both systems include DOS, Windows+, and a suite of mobile software
applications preinstalled on the hard disk. In addition, OS/2(R)
Warp Version 3.0 (including BonusPak applications) is available on
DX4-based systems as a preinstalled operating system with dual boot.
Many new options are available for the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS, such
as the ThinkPad 701 Dock II Adapter Kit(1), the ThinkPad 701 NiMh
Battery Pack, an AC adapter, and an external floppy diskette drive.
ThinkPad Pentium** Upgrade optional features for the ThinkPad 755CE,
CSE, and CD are also available. The features allow current users of
these systems to upgrade the processor from the IntelDX4** 100MHz to
the Intel Pentium processor for increased performance.

Limitations
Use of Suspend and Hibernate Modes
o If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode with a diskette inserted in
the diskette drive, the same diskette must be installed in the
drive before your computer can resume normal operation.
o If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode when resuming the
operation, the same HDD should be in the system.
o If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode with a PCMCIA card inserted
in the PCMCIA slot, the same PCMCIA card must be in the PCMCIA
slot when resuming operation.
o If you are connected to a local area network (LAN) that
periodically polls for station activity, your connection may be
terminated while the computer is in Suspend or Hibernate mode.
Any software program that was running over the LAN is not
re-entered when you resume.
o The system does not enter Suspend or Hibernate mode while a PCMCIA
modem card is in busy status.
General Limitations
o The battery will charge in Suspend mode when the power switch is
in the "on" position but will not charge if the power switch is in
the "off" position. The battery will not charge while in
Hibernation mode.
o Color display drivers for 256 and 64K colors for IBM OS/2 Warp
Version 3.0 will be included on systems preinstalled with
OS/2 Warp. A 16-million-color driver will be added when
available. When any additional color drivers become available,
the drivers will be provided on the IBM PC Company Bulletin Board
(PCCO BBS).
o IBM recommends 6MB, or higher, system memory and a hard disk size
of 120MB, or higher, for many application scenarios in the
OS/2 environment.
o A maximum modem speed of 9600 baud can be used with FaxWorks and
OS/2 Warp Version 3.0.
o Installation of the software update named WIN311.ZIP is required
to use a WIN-OS/2(TM) session when OS/2 for WIN is used with
Windows 3.11.
o The IR functions are not available under native OS/2 sessions at
this time.
o When using the Redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the
HP 100LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115Kbps, the ThinkPad
701C and 701CS should be configured as the requestor.
o The modem should not be attached to digital or digital telephone
PBX systems. These systems may cause damage to the modem.
o The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS support software fax programs with
Class 1 fax interface only, not Class 2.
o The IBM Enhanced Mouse (92G7457) cannot be used with TrackPoint
III. When using the Enhanced Mouse, TrackPoint III should be
disabled.
o The system is designed so you can install or remove the PCMCIA
card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports
this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the
PCMCIA card.
o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the
PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only
one card to be used.
o The use of PCMCIA card point enablers is not recommended; you
should use the IBM PC Card Director. PCMCIA card point enablers
may write directly to the hardware, by passing Socket and Card
Services Release 2.1. Writing directly to the hardware may cause
problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may
interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with
Socket and Card Services Release 2.1. Additional customer testing
in their specific environments is recommended.
o PCMCIA card point enablers usually do not support a slot number
greater than two. If using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler,
ensure that the proper slot is supported by the point enabler.
o The IBM 8516 Touch Screen Color Display and IBM ThinkPad Space
Saver Keyboard require that the TrackPoint III be disabled before
you connect them to the system. To disable the TrackPoint III,
follow the instructions provided in the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS
User's Guide.
o Password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from
"partial" Suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad
Dock II. However, you must type the correct password to resume.
o All IDE hard disk drives, except the IBM ThinkPad 755 drives that
are sensed and configured automatically, must be configured as
"slave" when used with the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS systems using
file bays in ThinkPad Dock II.
Suspend Mode Operational Considerations
o Operating Systems: The Suspend mode is supported when the PC card
uses one of the following operating systems:
- OS/2 Warp Version 3.0
- OS/2 2.11, and later
- IBM PC DOS 6.3
- Microsoft Windows 3.11 with DOS 6.3
Note: Do not remove or install PCMCIA cards during Suspend mode.
When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management
(APM) is installed. The installation instructions are in the
user's guide Installing Microsoft Windows Version 3.11 (or later).
Without this step, power management will not work correctly, and
can cause errors, such as mouse problems after suspend/resume.
o Communications: When the computer communicates with other systems
via any communication PC card, the following precautions must be
considered before using the Suspend function.
- When the computer is powered by the battery pack, the computer
automatically turns power off to the PC card before entering
Suspend mode, so the duration of Suspend mode will last longer.
Therefore, the computer will not restore the communications
application when it returns to normal operation from Suspend
mode, except when the following PCMCIA cards are used: IBM
PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem and IBM High Speed PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem.
- To re-establish communication after suspend mode, restart the
system or the application program.
- For non-disruptive battery exchange, you can put the system in
Suspend mode and exchange battery packs without any loss of
data or function.
Pentium Upgrade Option for ThinkPad 755CE, CSE, and CD: Installation
of the Pentium Upgrade option in the ThinkPad 755CE, CSE, and CD
disables the parity check function of the system.
Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities: The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS are designed
for customer setup. Setup documentation is contained in the user's
guide shipped with the system. The ThinkPad Pentium Upgrade Kit
(755CS/CSE/CD) is not customer installable.
Cable Orders: All required cables are included with the system.
Installability: The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS systems require
approximately 15 minutes for installation. Installation includes
unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time
is required to install other memory and features, and to customize
software.
Problem Determination: If a failure is found at initial
installation, an instruction or error code is displayed on the
screen. Note this information and refer to the user's guide shipped
with the system unit. For additional assistance, call the HelpCenter
at 800-772-2227.
The troubleshooting procedures consist of power-on self-test,
diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow troubleshooting charts designed
to assist users in isolating a defective machine element. The
failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing
warranty provisions.
The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS also have advanced diagnostics
preinstalled on the hard disk drive to assist servicers.

ThinkPad EasyServ: Warranty service for the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS
will be provided by ThinkPad EasyServ. ThinkPad EasyServ is a
courier repair service in which the ThinkPad system will be picked up
at the customer's location and delivered to an IBM-designated repair
location. The repaired machine will be returned to the customer.
Charges for the courier service will be paid by IBM.
If warranty service is required, the customer should call the
HelpCenter at 800-772-2227. The HelpCenter will assist the user with
problem isolation for both hardware and software. If a hardware
problem is identified, the HelpCenter will arrange for a courier to
pick up the system for overnight delivery (where available) to the
repair location. Most repairs should be made the same day the system
is received at the repair location. Customers should keep the
original shipping carton for shipping to the repair location. If the
original shipping carton is not available, the courier will deliver a
shipping carton and return to pick up the system for delivery to the
repair location.
International Warranty Service (2630): Customers who travel or need
to move products to another country will be able to register the
products for IBM International Warranty Service. Upon registering
with the International Warranty Service Office (IWSO), IBM will issue
an International Service Certificate that will be honored virtually
worldwide, where IBM or IBM resellers sell and service IBM PC
products. During the original warranty period, customers will be
provided service through the service delivery methods available for
their specific IBM system in the servicing country.
