DESCRIPTION

PCMCIA Data Communication Capabilities

o Multimode support

CDPD network services is an emerging wireless data technology
being deployed over existing cellular AMPS networks by leading
cellular service providers. These cellular service providers
include GTE**, McCaw Cellular, AirTouch** Communications,
Bell-Atlantic Mobile, Ameritech**, BellSouth, and Sprint**
   Cellular.

o Installation Flexibility -- The IBM Wireless Modem for
Cellular/CDPD can be installed internally in the ThinkPad(R) on a
number of models including the Thinkpad 755CD, 755CE, and 755CSE.
This is accomplished through a specially designed tray that
replaces the floppy disk drive (FDD).

For all other mobile platforms (IBM and non-IBM), the IBM Wireless
Modem for Cellular/CDPD PCMCIA Type II modem can be installed in
the PCMCIA slot with an external cable to the RF Deck. The RF
Deck can be attached to the back of the system cover with the
   provided mounting plate.

o Advanced Power Management -- For the Thinkpad 755CD, 755CE, and
755CSE, integration into the Thinkpad's FDD bay allows the IBM
Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD to run off of the system's
battery. The IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD can preserve
battery power through a number of sleep modes that reduce battery
drainage when the IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD is not in
   use.

o Software Support -- The IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD
includes software applications that provide maximum functionality
"right out of the box." These include:

   - IBM Wireless Modem Manager lets you switch between the various
modes of the product (CDPD, Cellular Amps Voice, Cellular AMPs
data). It provides dialing capabilities for the AMPS voice
function and connection management to CDPD network services.
IBM Wireless Modem Manager allows user setup, configuration,
      and installation.

   - Quicklink Mobile Fax/Modem software lets you send and receive
faxes or send and receive data via the Cellular AMPS data mode.
Quicklink Mobile also aids in the configuration of the PCMCIA
      slot.

   - IBM TCP/IP program elements (subset of IBM TCP/IP) are
provided to support CDPD network connection. In addition, FTP,
      SMTP, and PING are provided.

Wireless Data Communication

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD lets you send and receive data
to and from corporate networks by using the cellular network. You
can utilize the Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD to send data in one
of two ways. In CDPD mode, you can register onto the CDPD network,
which is an IP network similar to the Internet. In CDPD mode, you
can access applications defined to the CDPD network, or can send
information back through gateways to the Internet or other
value-added networks (VANs).

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD also runs in circuit-switched
cellular mode that lets you dial into modems, modem pools, or fax
machines for asynchronous communication or facsimile.
Circuit-switched cellular mode is similar to landline communication
to a modem with the difference being that the cellular network is
utilized as opposed to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
Forward-error-correction protocols are utilized in circuit-switched
cellular mode to obtain speeds up to 14.4Kbps.

Voice Communication

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD also lets you make cellular
voice calls over the AMPS cellular network. An earphone is shipped
with the product to utilize the voice functions. You can dial a
phone number through the Wireless Modem Manager software GUI.

IBM Wireless Modem Manager

The Wireless Modem Manager manages the various modes of the Wireless
Modem for Cellular/CDPD. It lets you switch between voice,
circuit-switched cellular, and CDPD communication. It provides the
following features and functions:

o Voice Cellular support (for example, dialing and phone book)
o Communication status indicators (for example, signal strength)
o Connection services for the CDPD network
o Address configuration and security

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD is a high-speed, multifunctional
PCMCIA modem for IBM and non-IBM portable systems. It complements
users of IBM and non-IBM portable systems by supporting wireless
wide-area connectivity for applications including fax, two-way
messaging, remote LAN access, terminal emulation, and connection to
CDPD network services.

The strengths of the IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD are:

o Wide-Area Communication

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD provides wireless data
communication support in most geographical locations. If you are
in a geographical location that does not have CDPD support, or
will have CDPD support in the near future, the multimode
functionality of the Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD allows you
to migrate from AMPS cellular to CDPD when it is available.

   - CDPD Services -- low-cost packet data transmission capability
   - Cellular AMPS Support -- for voice and data communications
   - PCMCIA form factor -- for broad platform compatibility

o Packaging Flexibility

Can be packaged to work with most system platforms and is
   available in the following configurations:

   - Battery Assist Option -- for IBM and non-IBM portables
   - 755 FDD Tray option -- for integration into certain IBM
      Thinkpad models

o Solution-Oriented

Software included to provide complete solution

   - Wireless Modem Manager included for adapter mode management,
AMPS phone dialing, and connection to CDPD services
   - QuickLink Mobile Fax/Modem software included for fax and data
      transfer capabilities

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD
transmits and receives data over the cellular network, in either
circuit-switched or CDPD mode. Local cellular service providers
should be contacted to determine if these modes are available in the
location of choice.

Access to your enterprise or LAN network may be provided through
modem pools or gateways that the local service providers have
installed on the cellular network. Local cellular service providers
should be contacted to see if these gateways have been installed.

Cable Orders: Cables will be supplied as part of the base shipment
group of the product. For part numbers 04H7122, 25H4785, and
25H4786, a cable will be supplied to connect the modem to the RF
deck. For part numbers 25H4755, 25H4803, and 25H4804, a ribbon cable
to connect the RF deck to the modem for integration into the FDD tray
will be supplied

Problem Determination: Problem determination for the Wireless Modem
for Cellular/CDPD can be performed in different ways.

The Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD has a set of LEDs that can
indicate potential problems with wireless communication.

o LED #1 POST Test

This LED will be on "green" if there is power to the adapter and
it has passed the Power On Self Test (POST)

o LED #2 Network Coverage

This LED will be on "green" if the adapter is within range of a
mobile base station and is receiving information from the control
   channel.

o LED #3 Data Transmission

This LED will on "green" if the adapter is transmitting data
   packets

Through the Wireless Modem Manager, there are a number of software
status indicators that are displayed to the user. These status
indicators alert the user to the following:
