I don't know about the latest drivers, but with the original drivers this could be worked around through extra software (using valuable memory) and careful allocation of memory. It's plug-n-play under Warp. I'm not sure, but I think they may have finally adopted card services under windows as well. The Warp driver hangs on boot if the card isn't in place. This is annoying, but tolerable. They claim to be working on a solution. There is an upgraded driver, denoted on the 3com bulletin board with an 'n'.
