Hi everyone,
Just a quick question to see if any of you have experienced this.
While running under Windows/DOS and on two
occasions now while doing a refresh discharge and subsequent charge, I have
had my power managment software obtrusively disabled, and not by me.
The battery icon becomes a dotted-line figure with no indication of current
charge or capacity status. Attempts to call the fuel feature from
Thinkpad features group gets the error message that the fuel program is
disabled. To enable it, you are told to run the setup from DOS in the
Windows directory and select DOS system with APM... this does work, but
doesn't require any real change, DOS with APM is already selected.
Can anyone explain what is happening here? It is quite disconcerting when
trying to keep the battery life, and fuel readouts consistent with battery
capacity and status and warning alarms... that is, to keep the fuel gauge
system and warning beeps working and giving believable reports. I know
that I can't be the only one that has trouble with these features.
It's only a little thing, but can be a source of frustration.
------------------
By the way, I might mention a "tip" that the IBM help center gave me last year.
My battery "time remaining" will often get out of sync with capacity and
readout of the fuel gauge and the warning beeps. For example, system
will start beeping that the battery is on it's last legs when in fact,
the readout says there is 50% left. I realize that part of the problem is
that my battery is degrading over time. But anyway, the tip is essentially
to remove the battery, turn off the switch momentarily and then back on.
When putting back in, immediately do discharge followed by charge.
Parameters on the fuel gage and the warning beeps are then back in "sync"
for a time. The warning beeps don't come on until battery capacity is down
near the low end as would be expected. If you just do a discharge and
charge, that seems to help a little but not quite as well as first cycling
the battery switch. The switch "cycling" seems to
straighten things out, but I wonder if I it wise to follow this procedure.
Perhaps someone can comment.
Regards and thanks,
Joe
