I thought this wasn't mentality but a legal edict that came about from
the anti-trust suits against IBM a couple decades back. Although IBM
managed to "win" in that it wasn't broken up like AT&T, didn't it have
some restrictions placed on it, like not being able to pre-announce
products to keep people from buying a competitor's product which is
available right now, much like a major software company does so
successfully right now?
It would also tend to explain why IBM sells a few new thinkpads months
before production is up to full speed.
