the talk of viruses and stealing copyrighted code (you cannot "write something yourself and .. don't have them copyrighted" unless you explicitly waivce the copyright, you automatically have a copyright on everything you write) is indeed silly, but a number of people have considered this MS procedure to be intrusive, and I certainly would not carry it out on my machine.
