This is exactly what I thought would happen when I first jumped on the Linux bandwagon, but I haven't had to do any kernel modifications. I recall with great fondness all the kernel hacks I had to do on the old SunOS to get graphics devices to work. At any rate, I can't see a big difference between having a Linux-aware sysadmin and a Solaris-aware sysadmin. Parenthetically, in a research shop, having the OS source code can be very handy. Sun machines and software have a well-deserved reputation for file serving. I wouldn't want to change that (if it ain't broke...). But I don't yet see a strong argument for Solaris (or other commercial UNIX) over things like Linux, for workstations and pads. I don't mean to come off as a Linux advocate. In fact, I would appreciate hearing a stronger case for commerical OS's. Eugene.
