necessary software.
If you cannot get the updated software from either one, please
contact your IBM representative, or contact IBM HelpCenter (1-800-
772-2227) for more information.
1.2. System program update (Flash BIOS update)
----------------------------------------------
Before you install Windows 95, you are strongly recommended to get
the following version of ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette
and to update your flash BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 95 may not run
as explained in this document. You need to follow the instructions
provided by the system program service diskette very carefully to
update your flash BIOS program. Your system could be damaged by
incorrect operations during this system program update.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The preview program version of Windows 95 beta and earlier versions
have a problem with IBM ThinkPad System Program Service Diskettes.
You MUST turn on the write-protect switch of your ThinkPad System
Service Diskette right after you create the diskette from its source
file. If you don't, Windows 95 could damage the diskette when you
write some data on it, or use "DIR" command against it. In this
case, the diskette no longer works as a system service diskette and
you need to recreate a diskette from the source diskette image.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
<System Program Service Diskettes for ThinkPads>

2. IBM is testing the following ThinkPad systems with Windows 95
but only APM BIOS 1.0 is supported. No PnP BIOS support is
available on those systems.
- ThinkPad 750 Family
- ThinkPad 340 (Monochrome display system)
- ThinkPad 230Cs
3: IBM is not testing any other ThinkPad systems with Windows 95.
Windows 95 may run on those legacy ThinkPad systems but IBM
has/will not test Windows 95 on those systems.
1.3. Removing incompatible preinstalled software
------------------------------------------------
If you plan to install, or have already installed Windows 95 beta
program over the following ThinkPad systems with factory preinstalled
software, you may encounter "Windows 95 Explorer Fault".
- ThinkPad 755C/Cs
- ThinkPad 360/355 Family
- ThinkPad 755CE/CD
- ThinkPad 340CSE
- ThinkPad 370C
- ThinkPad 701C
If you have this problem, or to avoid this problem, please take the
following steps.
1. Edit your WIN.INI file located under C:\WINDOWS subdirectory.
For example, type "E C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and press ENTER from
DOS command prompt.
2. In [windows] section, find the "load=" statement. Remove
STRTSCR.EXE from the "load=" statement as follows.
<Example>
Your original WIN.INI
---------------------
[windows]
:
load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:
Remove STRTSCR.EXE
------------------
[windows]
:
load=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:
3. After you remove STRTSCR.EXE, you will no longer see the
ThinkPad Welcome screen. If you have already removed this
screen, nothing will be changed by removing STRTSCR.EXE.
Note: If your system is either ThinkPad 755CX or 755CV, the
new STRTSCR.EXE on your system can be used on Windows 95
beta program.
1.4. Before installing Windows 95
---------------------------------
Before you install Windows 95 beta program, it is recommended
to review the information which is particular to your ThinkPad
model. This would minimize your effort to set up Windows 95 beta
program on your ThinkPad system.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. ThinkPad 755C/Cs systems
---------------------------
2.1. Install and setup Windows 95 on ThinkPad
---------------------------------------------
2.1.0. Before you proceed
-------------------------
Again, you are strongly recommended to get the latest system
program service diskette and update your system BIOS. Otherwise,
the following information is not applicable on your system.
2.1.1. During Windows 95 installation
-------------------------------------
You may encounter "Unknown Hardware Found" message when you install
Windows 95 beta code. In this case, select "Do not install a driver
(Windows will not prompt you again)". By doing this, you will see
"Unknown Device" under "Other devices" in Windows 95 Device Manager.
This "Unknown Device" is ThinkPad Audio device. If you want to see
this device name in Device Manager, refer to "Unknown Hardware"
problem in Section 2.2.
2.1.2. Video device drivers
---------------------------
The video device driver for ThinkPad 755C/Cs systems is included
in Windows 95 and it is automatically installed by Windows 95
Setup program. You don't need ThinkPad Windows video device driver
any longer but still need to install ThinkPad VESA video driver.
The following procedure enables Windows 95 video device driver
functions.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The following procedure is NOT applicable on ThinkPad 755CE/CD/CX/CV
systems.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
<Enabling Windows 95 Video device driver>
1. Check your CONFIG.SYS file and look for the following statement.
:
DEVICE=C:\IBMVESA\VESA.EXE
:
(Note: The directory "C:\IBMVESA" could be different if you
have installed ThinkPad DOS video device driver into a
different subdirectory.)
If you find the statement, your system is already set up for
Windows 95 video device driver for ThinkPad. If not, go to
the next step.
2. Have ThinkPad Video feature diskette. (The latest version as
of 6/1/95 is 1.33) and insert it into the diskette drive.
3. Go to the DOS command prompt. Then, type A:VINSTALL and press
Enter. The supported display list appears.
4. Using the Arrow keys, highlight the display type which you
use with your ThinkPad, and press Enter.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to save your display
selection; then press F3 to exit the menu.
6. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive; then restart the
system. The ThinkPad is now ready to work with Windows 95 beta

4. Make sure that Adapter Type is "Western Digital".
5. Close "Change Display Type" windows; verify that "256 Color" can
be selected in "Color palette".
2.1.3. ThinkPad Features Program
--------------------------------
The ThinkPad Features Program for Windows works on Windows 95. If
you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on which you
have already installed ThinkPad Features Program, it is migrated
into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start"; click "Programs";
click "ThinkPad"; then click "ThinkPad Features" to start the
program.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't
installed ThinkPad Features Program, follow the instructions of
"ThinkPad Features Program - Installing for Windows" in the
ThinkPad User's Guide.
2.1.4. PCMCIA Device driver
---------------------------
Windows 95 comes with the integrated PCMCIA support. To use the
Windows 95 PCMCIA support functions, refer to the Windows 95
documentation or on-line help.
If you want to use ThinkPad PC Card Director (or EasyPlaying),
you still can use ThinkPad DOS PCMCIA device drivers. To
install ThinkPad PCMCIA device drivers, follow the instructions
of "Installing the PCMCIA drivers - Installing for DOS" in
the ThinkPad User's Guide. However, it is recommended to use
the Windows 95 version of PCMCIA support until ThinkPad Windows 95
PCMCIA software becomes available.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The Windows 95 installation program doesn't enable its own 32bit
PCMCIA support automatically. If you already have a ThinkPad system
with ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA software and install Windows 95 beta
on the system, the Windows 95 installation program keeps the ThinkPad
PCMCIA support software and you can keep using it. However, the
Windows 95 plug and play functions of its own PCMCIA support cannot
be used with ThinkPad PCMCIA support software. For more detail about
PCMCIA support software setup, refer to "Section 8.4. PCMCIA support
software setup.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2.1.5. Audio Support Software
-----------------------------
The ThinkPad Audio Support Software for Windows works on Windows
95. If you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on
which you have already installed ThinkPad Audio Support Software,
it is migrated into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start";
click "Programs"; then click "Audio" to select the ThinkPad audio
program which you use.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't
installed ThinkPad Features Program, follow the instructions of
"ThinkPad Features Program - Installing for Windows" in the
ThinkPad User's Guide.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
ThinkPad Audio Support Software setup makes several program icons to
use ThinkPad audio functions. The "Sound Recorder" icon, which works
fine under Windows 3.1, is not set up correctly under Windows 95
because the program name of Windows sound record utility is changed.
To setup "Sound Recorder" icon;
1. Verify that you have successfully installed or migrated ThinkPad
Audio Support Software onto Windows.
- Click "Start"; click "Programs"; then click "Audio"
- "Audio Control", "Media Player", "Sound Recorder" and "Read Me"
programs should be visible. If not, you need to reinstall
ThinkPad Audio Support Software.
2. Click "Start"; click "Settings"; then click "Taskbar..."
3. Click on "Start Menu Programs" tab.
4. Click "Advanced..." button.
5. Click "+" mark of "Programs" in the hierarchy window located left-
hand side; then click "Audio".
6. Highlight "Sound Recorder" in the content window located right-
hand side; click "File" menu; then click "Properties".
7. Click on "Shortcut" tab; and change "Target" program name from
"SOUNDREC.EXE" to "C:\WINDOWS\SNDREC32.EXE". (C:\WINDOWS could
be different depending on the subdirectory in which you installed
Windows 95.)
8. Click "OK"; now you can use "Sound Recorder" under Windows 95.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2. Known limitations and problems with Windows 95 beta program
----------------------------------------------------------------
o ThinkPad Audio driver limitations
When ThinkPad Audio driver is loaded, the suspend function has the
following limitations.
- When you play audio and try to suspend during the audio playback,
the system doesn't suspend.
- When you try to suspend the system and fail to do so, you need to
wait for five to fifteen seconds. Then try to suspend the system
again. If you still cannot suspend the system, you may need to
wait for another fifteen seconds or so to suspend the system
successfully.
o Power management limitations with PC cards
When you inserted a PC card into PCMCIA slots of ThinkPad, the
suspend function currently has the following limitations.
- When the system is power by AC, ThinkPad doesn't enter full
suspend and enters standby mode.
- When the system is power by battery, ThinkPad always enter
suspend mode regardless of the PC card status. You may lose
the connection if your PC card is a network card or modem.
- Windows 95 PCMCIA support software does not support the ring
indicator of PCMCIA modem cards. Therefore, you cannot use
ring indications by PCMCIA modems even if it's support by
cards.
o No Ring indicator supported by Windows 95 PCMCIA support
Windows 95 PCMCIA support software does not support the ring
indicator of PCMCIA modem cards. Therefore, you cannot use

cards.
o Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter problem
When you use IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter II (Part
Number 0933931) with Windows 95 PCMCIA support software, the
card may not be enabled correctly. Most 755C/Cs products don't
have this problem. IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter and
IBM Token-Ring Auto 16/4 Credit Adapter III (Part Number 04H6922)
don't have this problem.
o Horizontal stripe appears with mouse pointer on external CRT
When you attach a high resolution external CRT monitor and switch
between a MS-DOS full screen session and Windows 95 desktop, you
may observe a horizontal stripe with the mouse pointer. If this
happens, take the following steps.
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Performance" tab
5. Click "Graphics..." button
6. Move the slider of "Hardware acceleration" left one notch
7. You will be prompted to restart the system
Upon next system boot, the horizontal stripe should disappear.
o Mwave DSP processor appears in Device Manager
You may find "Mwave DSP processor" under "Other devices" in
Device Manager while ThinkPad 755C/Cs don't have Mwave device.
If you encounter this problem, go to "Unknown Hardware" problem
below.
o "Unknown Hardware" problem
If you want to fix this problem, you first need to modify a Win95
information file in a hidden directory. If you are not familiar
with Windows 95 beta or you are a non-experienced PC / Windows
user, it's not recommended to do the following. Unexpected results
may occur if you cannot follow the instructions correctly.
1. Go to MS-DOS Prompt
2. Type "CD INF" and press Enter to go to the subdirectory
C:\WINDOWS\INF. (Note that C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden directory)
3. Back up NODRIVER.INF. Type "COPY NODRIVER.INF NODRIVER.BAK".
These *.INF files are very important for Windows 95 Device
Manager and you need to save the original one.
4. Edit NODRIVER.INF. Type "EDIT NODRIVER.INF" and press Enter.
5. Search [Manufacturer] section; Find the following statement.
%IBMMfg%=IBM
If you can find it, go to the next step. Otherwise, add this
statement in [Manufacturer] section.
6. Search [IBM] section; if you don't find it, add [IBM] section
somewhere between [Manufacturer] and [NODRIVER] section; find
the following statement.
%*IBM0040.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM0040
If you cannot find it, simply add this statement in [IBM]
section. Otherwise, go to the next step.
7. Search [String] section; find 'IBMMfg="IBM"' statement; after
this line, find the following statement.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="xxxxxx" (xxxxxx is some device name)
If you find it, change it to as follows.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Audio Device"
8. Save the modified NODRIVER.INF file. And exit MS-DOS prompt.
Next, you need to remove "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") from
Device Manager. Then need to refresh the hardware structure.
9. Click "My Computer"
10. Click "Control Panel"
11. Click "System"
12. Click on "Device Manager" tab
13. Click "+" mark of "Other devices"; you see "Unknown Device"
(or "Mwave DSP processor").
14. Click on "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") and click "Remove"
button; click "OK" to confirm.
15. Click "Refresh" button; Windows 95 will restructure the device
tree in "Device Manager" and you now should see "ThinkPad Audio
Device" under "Other detected devices".
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
If you encounter any unexpected results by doing the above, you
might have failed to modify your NODRIVER.INF file correctly. You
should recover your original NODRIVER.INF from NODRIVER.BAK which
you've saved. Rename NODRIVER.BAK to NODRIVER.INF and do the above
steps again, if desired.

4.2. Known limitations and problems with Windows 95 beta program
----------------------------------------------------------------
o Power management limitations with PC cards
When you inserted a PC card into PCMCIA slots of ThinkPad, the
suspend function currently has the following limitations.
- When the system is power by AC, ThinkPad doesn't enter full
suspend and enters standby mode.
- When the system is power by battery, ThinkPad always enter
suspend mode regardless of the PC card status. You may lose
the connection if your PC card is a network card or modem.
o No Ring indicator supported by Windows 95 PCMCIA support
Windows 95 PCMCIA support software does not support the ring
indicator of PCMCIA modem cards. Therefore, you cannot use
ring indications by PCMCIA modems even if it's support by
cards.
o Windows 95 logo screen becomes brown
Upon Windows 95 boot, its logo screen background becomes brown.
This is normal and everything works fine after Windows 95 desktop
screen appears.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. ThinkPad 755CE/CSE/CX/CD/CDV systems
---------------------------------------
5.1. Install and setup Windows 95 on ThinkPad
---------------------------------------------
5.1.0. Before you proceed
-------------------------
Again, you are strongly recommended to get the latest system
program service diskette and update your system BIOS. Otherwise,
the following information is not applicable on your system.
5.1.1. During Windows 95 installation
-------------------------------------
You may encounter "Unknown Hardware Found" messages when you install
Windows 95 beta code. In these cases, select "Do not install a driver
(Windows will not prompt you again)". By doing this, you will see
"Unknown Device"s under "Other devices" in Windows 95 Device Manager.
If you want to see those device names in Device Manager, refer to
"Unknown Hardware" problem in Section 5.2.
5.1.2. Video device drivers
---------------------------
The video device driver for ThinkPad 755CE/CD/CX/CV systems is
included in Windows 95 and it is automatically installed by Windows
95 Setup program.
<Verifying Windows95 device driver setup for ThinkPad 755CE/CD/CV>
1. After installing or set up Windows 95 on your ThinkPad; click
"My Computer".
2. Click "Control Panel"; Click "Display"; Click on "Setting" tab.
3. Click "Change Display Type..." button.
4. Make sure that Adapter Type is "Western Digital".
<Verifying Windows 95 device driver setup for ThinkPad 755CX>
Windows 95 preview beta (M8) doesn't support ThinkPad 755CX 800x600
LCD. It supports only 640x480 resolution. If you have a later
release of Windows 95, it may include 800x600 support.
1. After installing or set up Windows 95 on your ThinkPad; click
"My Computer".
2. Click "Control Panel"; Click "Display"; Click on "Setting" tab.
3. Click "Change Display Type..." button.
4. Click "Change" button for "Adapter Type"
5. If the list shows "IBM ThinkPad 755CX(WD)", your Windows 95 beta
release supports 800x600. Select it and click "OK".
6. You will be prompted to restart the system. After reboot, you can
get 800x600 resolution.
5.1.3. ThinkPad Features Program
--------------------------------
The ThinkPad Features Program for Windows works on Windows 95. If
you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on which you
have already installed ThinkPad Features Program, it is migrated
into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start"; click "Programs";
click "ThinkPad"; then click "ThinkPad Features" to start the
program.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk or you haven't
installed ThinkPad Features Program, follow the instructions of
"ThinkPad Features Program - Installing for Windows" in the
ThinkPad User's Guide.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
The "Display" device driver setting of ThinkPad Features has a
problem with Windows 95 beta. Before changing any display setting
by "Display" applet, refer to "Display device driver setting problem"
in section 5.2.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1.5. CD-ROM Device driver (ThinkPad 755CD or other CD-ROM model only)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 95 comes with a generic ATAPI CD-ROM driver and it works
with the ThinkPad integrated CD-ROM. However, DOS/Windows version
of IBM CD-ROM driver is not removed, if you upgrade to Windows 95 beta
from DOS/Windows with IBM CD-ROM driver loaded. The CD-ROM is still
visible in this case but you lose speed and some functionality which
Windows 95 generic ATAPI driver provides. The generic Windows 95
CD-ROM driver is automatically installed if you don't migrated from
DOS/Windows or you migrated from DOS/Windows but without IBM CD-ROM
driver. To make sure that you are using Windows 95 generic ATAPI
CD-ROM driver, do the following steps.
1. Go to MS-DOS command prompt
2. Edit CONFIG.SYS
3. Look for IBMTPCD.SYS in CONFIG.SYS
<example>
DEVICE=C:\xxxxxx\IBMTPCD.SYS /D:TPCD001 /P:170 /R
(Note xxxxxx is the name of subdirectory where you installed the
CD-ROM driver)
If you find it, add "REM" before this statement to comment it out;
save CONFIG.SYS.
If you cannot find it or it's already REM'd out, quit and go to
the next step.
4. Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT
5. Look for MSCDEX.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT
<example>
C:\xxxxxx\MSCDEX.EXE /D:TPCD001 /M:15
(Note xxxxxx is the name of subdirectory where you installed the
CD-ROM driver)
If you find it, add "REM" before this statement to comment it out;
save AUTOEXEC.BAT.
If you cannot find it or it's already REM'd out, quit and go to
the next step.
6. Exit DOS command prompt; Reboot the system.
5.1.6. Mwave support software
-----------------------------
You need to have Mwave support software version 1.10 or later to get
Mwave functions on Windows 95 beta. If you are not sure what version
of Mwave software you have, run "C:\MWW\MANAGER\MWLEVELS.EXE" (the
location of MWLEVELS might be different, if you didn't install Mwave
support software into the default directory) from Windows. This opens
up a text window and you can find your Mwave software version at the
bottom of windows as follows.
OEM=Mwave ThinkPad Release 1.0
If you already have Mwave version 1.10 software in your system with
Windows and you plan to install Windows 95 over Windows system, Mwave
software is automatically migrated to the Windows 95 environment.
In case you already have Mwave version 1.10 software in your system
with Windows but you plan to install Windows 95 into a different
directory or drive, Mwave software is NOT migrated to the Windows 95
system. This is by design of Windows 95. You need to install Mwave
support software again from Windows 95.
If you plan to install Windows 95 beta on a blank harddisk, Windows
95 doesn't need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, thus those two files are
missing on the root directory of the boot drive. Mwave software
requires both files on the root directory of the boot drive in order
to be installed correctly. After installing Windows 95 on your
system, make CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT on your system's boot drive.
CONFIG.SYS can be a blank file. AUTOEXEC.BAT must have a path
statement, for example;
REM This AUTOEXEC.BAT is required for Mwave support software
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
(Note: "C:\" should be the driver letter of paritition on which you
have installed Windows 95 beta.)
Now you can install Mwave support software version 1.10 onto Windows
95 beta.
You must have a patch for Mwave software to run under Windows 95
correctly. This patch code can be obtained from IBM PC Company BBS or
from CompuServe ThinkPad Forum library section. Look for "Mwave fix
for > 16M and Macromedia Director". The installation instructions
are available in README file in this patch package.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
This patch code MUST be installed with Mwave support software version
1.10. And if you don't apply this patch, your Mwave support software
doesn't run under Windows 95 correctly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1.7. Infrared Device Driver
-----------------------------
You can use ThinkPad Infrared device driver on Windows 95. If you
have ThinkPad Infrared Device driver working on Windows and plan to
migrate to Windows 95 beta, the Infrared device driver will be
migrated to Windows 95 environment automatically.
If you don't have ThinkPad Infrared device driver on your Windows
system or you are going to install Windows 95 beta on a blank hard
disk, you can install ThinkPad Infrared device driver after you
install Windows 95 beta on your system. Follow the instructions
in "Installing the IR device driver - Installing for Windows" in
the ThinkPad User's Guide.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
If you encounter a problem when you disable the ThinkPad infrared
port and reassign the IRQ for the disabled infrared port to one of
the IRQs used by other device whose virtual device driver requires
exclusive use of its IRQ, you need to get a patch code for the
infrared virtual device driver. Go to "Problem with disabling
infrared port" in section 5.2.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1.8. Enhanced Video Device Driver
-----------------------------------
You can use ThinkPad Enhanced video device driver on Windows 95. If
you have the Enhanced video device driver working on Windows and plan
to migrate to Windows 95 beta, the Enhanced video device driver will
be migrated to Windows 95 environment automatically.
If you don't have ThinkPad Enhanced video device driver on your
Windows system or you are going to install Windows 95 beta on a blank
hard disk, you can install ThinkPad Enhanced video device driver after
you install Windows 95 beta on your system. Follow the instructions
in "Installing the Enhanced video device driver - Installing for
Windows" in the ThinkPad User's Guide.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
To enable the enhanced video functions, you need to change the
device setting by "Display" applet of ThinkPad Features. The
"Display" device driver setting of ThinkPad Features has a problem
with Windows 95 beta. Before changing any display setting by
"Display" applet, refer to "Display device driver setting problem"
in section 5.2.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore, you cannot use
ring indications by PCMCIA modems even if it's support by
cards.
o Horizontal stripe appears with mouse pointer on external CRT
When you attach a high resolution external CRT monitor and switch
between a MS-DOS full screen session and Windows 95 desktop, you
may observe a horizontal stripe with the mouse pointer. If this
happens, take the following steps.
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Performance" tab
5. Click "Graphics..." button
6. Move the slider of "Hardware acceleration" left one notch
7. You will be prompted to restart the system
Upon next system boot, the horizontal stripe should disappear.
o Timer suspend function with ThinkPad 755CD
ThinkPad system supports the timer suspend function. This is to
get the system suspended if there is no system activity for a
certain period. Windows 95 generic CD-ROM driver accesses the
CD-ROM devices every three seconds to detect CD-ROM insertion
automatically. This prevents ThinkPad 755CD from suspending
even if there is no actual system activity for long time. If you
want to enable the timer suspend function;
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Device Manager" tab
5. Click "+" mark on "CD-ROM"
6. Double click "TEAC CD-40E"
7. Click on "Setting" tab
8. Remove a check mark on "Auto insert notification"
o Mwave doesn't function when the ThinkPad has more than 16MB of
memory. This is a known Mwave driver problem and you can get the
fix for this. The patch code can be obtained from IBM PC Company
BBS or from CompuServe ThinkPad Forum library section. Look for
"Mwave fix for > 16M and Macromedia Director". The installation
instructions are available in README file in this patch package.
o Problem with disabling Infrared port
The problem typically occurs when you have reassigned the IRQ for
the disabled infrared port to one of the IRQs used by Mwave or any
other device whose virtual device driver requires exclusive use of
its IRQ. If you have such a virtual device driver, it will fail to
load during startup. This is not a problem if the IR port's IRQ is
used by a device driver that can share the IRQ, including the
standard COM port driver.
To fix this problem, you need to get "ThinkPad Infrared driver
patch to fix an IRQ problem" from IBM PC Company BBS or CompuServe
ThinkPad Forum Library section. The installation instructions
are available in the package.
o Suspend problem with Multimedia applications
It is not recommended to suspend the ThinkPad when you are playing
video clips, audio files, or MIDI files by Windows 95 Media Player
or other Multimedia applications. Your system may encounter some
problem upon resume of the system. Also it is not recommended to
suspend the ThinkPad 755CD system when you are using Digital Video
Producer, which is one of the preinstalled applications.
o Video capture problem
You may not be able to capture the video data for more than 15
seconds under Windows 95 beta with Digital Video Producer, which
is one of the preinstalled applications.
o Display device driver setting problem
When you want to change the display setting in Windows 3.x systems,
you use the "Display" applet of ThinkPad Features. Under Windows
95, you can change the display setting by "Display" property sheet
of Windows 95. The current "Display" applet of ThinkPad Features
requires ThinkPad video driver for Windows 3.x and has some problem
with Windows 95. You should not use "Display" applet unless you
need to change the device driver setting for IBM ThinkPad Enhanced
Video functions. When you need to change the Enhanced video driver
settings, take the following steps.
1. Make necessary changes in "Display" applet of ThinkPad Features.
2. Select "OK"; you will be prompted to select "Restart Windows" or
"Continue"; select "Continue"; then select "OK" to exit
"Display" applet.
3. Click "Shut down" on "Start Menu" of Windows 95; select "Restart
the computer?"; then click "Yes".
4. When "Start Windows 95..." message appears on the top left
corner of the screen, press F8; "Microsoft Windows 95 Startup
Menu" appears; select "3.Safe Mode".
5. When Windows 95 comes up, click "My Computer"; click "Control
Panel"; click "Control Panel"; click "Display".
6. Click on "Setting" tab; and make necessary changes of Display
settings; click "OK"; you will be prompted to restart the
computer; click "Yes".
7. The system will reboot and the changes of display setting are
taken effect.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
When you enable "Enhance Video functions" of ThinkPad 755CD, you
had better not use any high resolution modes with external CRT
monitors. If you do it, the resolution on ThinkPad internal LCD
screen could be set to 800x600 or 1024x768 while it supports only
up to 640x480. As the result, you would be able to see only 640x480
display area for the top left corner of 800x600, or 1024x768 area.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
o 180 degree display rotation is not supported
The 180 degree display rotation function of ThinkPad 755 CV Windows
display driver is not supported by Windows 95 Western Digital video
device driver. You shouldn't select 180 degree rotation in the
"Display" applet of ThinkPad Features program.
o "Unknown Hardware" problem
If you want to fix this problem, you first need to modify a Win95
information file in a hidden directory. If you are not familiar
with Windows 95 beta or you are a non-experienced PC / Windows
user, it's not recommended to do the following. Unexpected results
may occur if you cannot follow the instructions correctly. In
addition, your Windows 95 beta code may have already included
the correct device information of ThinkPad. It depends on which
revision of Windows 95 beta you are using.
1. Go to MS-DOS Prompt
2. Type "CD INF" and press Enter to go to the subdirectory
C:\WINDOWS\INF. (Note that C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden directory)
3. Back up NODRIVER.INF. Type "COPY NODRIVER.INF NODRIVER.BAK".
These *.INF files are very important for Windows 95 Device
Manager and you need to save the original one.
4. Edit NODRIVER.INF. Type "EDIT NODRIVER.INF" and press Enter.
5. Search [Manufacturer] section; Find the following statement.
%IBMMfg%=IBM
If you can find it, go to the next step. Otherwise, add this
statement in [Manufacturer] section.
6. Search [IBM] section; if you don't find it, add [IBM] section
somewhere between [Manufacturer] and [NODRIVER] section; find
the following statement(s).
%*IBMxxxx.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBMxxxx
(Note: xxxx of *IBMxxxx is a four digit number).
Modify (or add) the statement(s) in this section as follows.
(Note: IBM0050 and IBM36F1 is for ThinkPad 755 CD-ROM models
only.)
%*IBM0050.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM0050
%*IBM36E0.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM36E0
%*IBM36F1.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM36F1
%*IBM36F2.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM36F2
7. Search [String] section; find 'IBMMfg="IBM"' statement; after
this line, find the following statement.
*IBMxxxx.DeviceDesc="yyyyyy" (xxxx is a four digit number
yyyyyy is a device name )
Modify (or add) the statement(s) in this section as follows.
(Note: IBM0050 and IBM36F1 is for ThinkPad 755 CD-ROM models
only.)
*IBM0050.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Enhanced Video Device"
*IBM00E0.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Mwave DSP"
*IBM00F1.DeviceDesc="Mwave MPU-401 MIDI Port"
*IBM00F2.DeviceDesc="Mwave Sound Blaster Support Device"
15. Click "Refresh" button; Windows 95 will restructure the device
tree in "Device Manager" and you now should see correct device
names under "Other detected devices".
---------------------------------------------------------------------
o FaxWorks Voice problems
FaxWorks Voice, which is one of the preinstalled applications, has
the following problems under Windows 95 beta.
- Telephone Icon is not displayed properly
The FaxWorks telephone icon is not displayed properly as it is
in Windows 3.x. When you start one of FaxWorks Voice functions
such as Call Center, the telephone icon is displayed over the
program name of title bar. Once you minimize Call Center, the
telephone icon disappears from the title bar but some garbage
might remain on the Windows 95 desktop screen. This cosmetic
problem doesn't affect the actual functions of FaxWorks Voice.
- When you close the windows of FaxWorks Voice fax viewing, the
system may encounter a problem and you might have to reboot
the system.
- If you have any problem related to sending/receiving fax by
FaxWorks Voice, check the following.
1. Click "My Computer"; click "Printers"; double click "FaxWorks
Printer Driver (FX-WORKS)".
2. Click on "Details" tab; verify that MWV is selected in "Print
to the following port". Windows 95 beta might show "MWV
(Unknown local port)" but it is normal.
o Tranxit infrared file transfer application problem
Tranxit, which is one of the preinstalled applications, has the
following problem under Windows 95 beta.
- The high speed mode of IBM ThinkPad Infrared connection cannot
be used when you connect two ThinkPad systems and Windows 95
95 beta is installed on both of them. The fixed and variable
speed modes can be used. To change the transfer mode;
1. Select "Connection" on Tranxit menu bar; select "Setup..."
2. Verify that "Infrared" is selected in "Connection Type"; click
"Change Connection settings..."
3. Select "Fixed" or "Variable" in "Infrared device mode".
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. ThinkPad 701C system
-----------------------
6.1. Install and setup Windows 95 on ThinkPad
---------------------------------------------
6.1.0. Before you proceed
-------------------------
Again, you are strongly recommended to get the latest system
program service diskette and update your system BIOS. Otherwise,
the following information is not applicable on your system.
The Windows 95 device drivers for ThinkPad 701C are included in
Windows 95. When you install Windows 95 preview program beta (M8)
on ThinkPad 701C, the device drivers are installed automatically
except for infrared and ThinkPad 701C integrated modem. If you have
later build of Windows 95 beta, it might recognize the ThinkPad
infrared device and integrated modem.
6.1.1. Infrared device driver

"HP Infra-Red Communication Port"; then click "OK".
PCMCIA support
software setup.

modem" in "Install New Modem" dialog box; then click "Next"
7. Select "Standard 14400 bps Modem"; the click "Next"
8. Assign COM port for the modem according to your hardware
configuration
6.2. Known limitations and problems with Windows 95 beta program
----------------------------------------------------------------
o Docking problems with Windows 95 beta
If you have a Windows 95 beta later than the preview program
version, you might encounter the following docking problems.
Microsoft and IBM are working on those problems. You will not
see those problems with Windows 95 preview version.
- If you undock the Thinkpad 701C and redock it, Windows 95
may locks up.
- If you dock the ThinkPad 701C and undock it, the external
floppy drive of 701C may become disabled.
- If you dock the ThinkPad 701C, the auto suspend timer doesn't
work due to a Adapter SCSI driver problem in Windows 95 beta.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
7. ThinkPad 530CS system (Available only in Japan)
--------------------------------------------------
7.1. Install and setup Windows 95 on ThinkPad

"Unknown Hardware" problem in Section 5.2.
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
During the Windows 95 installation, you are asked if you want to
make a startup diskette for emergency use. It is strongly
recommended to attach the external floppy disk drive to ThinkPad
530CS when you install Windows 95 beta. Without the floppy drive,
you might experience an inactive period for about two minutes during
Windows 95 installation. This is not a system hang. However, you
need to attach the external floppy drive to avoid this symptom.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
7.1.2. Video device drivers
---------------------------
The video device driver for ThinkPad 530CS systems is included
in Windows 95 and it is automatically installed by Windows 95

95 Beta, refer to "Section 5.1.7. Infrared Device driver".
This is normal and everything works fine after Windows 95 desktop
screen appears.
o Mwave doesn't function when the ThinkPad has more than 16MB of
memory This is a known Mwave driver problem and you can get the
fix for this.
Your system may encounter some
problems upon system resume.
o Intermittent hibernation fail
ThinkPad 530Cs may not enter the hibernation mode with Windows 95
once in a while.
o Windows 95 Taskbar may disappear when CRT is attached
Windows 95 Taskbar may disappear when you attach an external CRT
monitor to ThinkPad 530Cs and suspend the system.
o "Unknown Hardware" problem
%*IBM36E0.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM36E0
%*IBM36F2.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM36F2
7. Search [String] section; find 'IBMMfg="IBM"' statement; after
this line, find the following statement.
*IBMxxxx.DeviceDesc="yyyyyy" (xxxx is a four digit number
yyyyyy is a device name )
Modify (or add) the statement(s) in this section as follows.
(Note: IBM0050 and IBM36F1 is for ThinkPad 755 CD-ROM models
only.)
*IBM00E0.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Mwave DSP"
*IBM00F2.DeviceDesc="Mwave Sound Blaster Support Device"
15. Click "Refresh" button; Windows 95 will restructure the device
tree in "Device Manager" and you now should see correct device
names under "Other detected devices".
<Important!>---------------------------------------------------------
If you encounter any unexpected results by doing the above, you
might have failed to modify your NODRIVER.INF file correctly. You
should recover your original NODRIVER.INF from NODRIVER.BAK which
you've saved. Rename NODRIVER.BAK to NODRIVER.INF and do the above
steps again, if you desired.
- The high speed mode of IBM ThinkPad Infrared connection cannot
be used when you connect two ThinkPad systems and Windows 95

menu" box.
8.2. System Compatibility Test in Windows 95 DDK beta
-----------------------------------------------------
IBM is closely working with Microsoft to get selected models of
ThinkPad passed the Windows 95 System Compatibility Test (SCT).
The SCT in Windows 95 M8 DDK is not a final test kit and has
some problems with ThinkPad systems. The Windows 95 SCT Kit
version 4.0 may have some problems with ThinkPad in the following
parts of SCT.
- PnP BIOS Test
- WkeyLook Test (To pass this test, you need to have an external
keyboard)
8.3. PCMCIA Adapter Card Compatibility
--------------------------------------
o PCMCIA network adpaters in Dock II
You may not be able to enable or get your PCMCIA network adapter
correctly when the card is inserted into the PCMCIA slot of IBM
Dock II docking station. If your card is working fine in the
ThinkPad internal PCMCIA slots, you need to contact IBM PC Company
HelpCenter and request a patch file.
