the advice that tech support gave you is correct, and i don't think your 
problem was related to the version of the video driver that you were using.  
when installing windoze, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS select VGA.  then, once it is 
installed and you reboot, you can set it to the resolution you want.  microsoft 
should emboss this on the installation diskettes.  i don't even know why it 
causes problems, but it does-- and not just on thinkpads.
