Using Thinkpad modems in France and Greece

Greetings! I'm new to this list. I'm a senior programmer/analyst in
Chicago. I have a Thinkpad 701C I just purchased that I intend to use in
Europe on a trip next week. Specifically Greece and France. I know this
mailing list covers 75X machines, but I imagine the modem issues are
similar. I'm not worried about power source. What concerns me is that the
IBM manual "dissuades" use of the internal modem in foreign countries other
than Canada. I have two questions really:

1) Can anyone confirm that I will be able to use the modem in Greece and
France (assuming I find an adapter for the phone jack for Greece - I just
bought one for France)?

2) I've contacted the Greece consulate here in Chicago and they tell me I
should have no trouble with the phone jacks as they are in fact the same as
in the USA. I find this hard to believe (but shouldn't they know?), so I
was wondering if anyone on this list can actually corroborate this
information. If I do need to buy an adapter would I be able to find one
there?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dan
