pcmcia dial tone passthrough

had a funny problem where i was trying to demo some product 
(well, sort of), and i was using a pcmcia modem card (the
Megahertz one we all have !).

anyway, i got a dial tone, and i heard the numbers being dialed
(touch tone), but the dial tone did not go away, but sat there.

after the number was dialed, i got a bogus error message (it
was either 'busy' or 'no dial tone' - i forget).

anyone ever have this happen on any kind of modem ?
