TP701CS Internal Modem

Hi all,

I am sending this e-mail for the first time to ThinkPad mailing list.

I have bought a ThinkPad701CS,8MB,540MB (HD),14.4Kbps Fax/Modem w/ DSP,
DockII docking module, LiMH battery with universal adaptor. (Whew! :-))

I bought the model in Japan (Yokohama, to be exact), and I applied for
International Warranty Service, so that I could get serviced no matter
where I go (well, where IBMs are sold anyway...).

Now, here goes my question. No matter how cleverly I set up 'Dial-up Network'
and 'Internet Browser', at the start of the program, Window95 warning
message comes up and says 'The modem cannot be found'. This is the same story
for 'Hyper terminal'. But, I see the modem has been correctly recorgnized
and listed in the system driver tree.

The only way I use the modem in my Window95 is, first bring up a Hyper Terminal
then put 'atz' to get 'OK' prompt, and then put 'atdt' command plus a phone
number to work with. This is the only way I can make a use of the internal
modem.

Questions are,
1. Do I need a special driver, not provided by Microsoft, but by IBM, to use
my internal modem on Window95? If so, where and how can I get (ftp site
would be nice) the special driver?
2. Do I have to install a special application to make direct use of the
internal modem. If so, what are they?

I always set both sound and modem power ON in my cmos set up, and my BIOS is
dated 11/21/95 (BUTJP3N), diag. rev. 11/22/95 (BFDUS1G).

3. Is there a new version of FaxWorks out yet? The software came up with didn't
have speaker-phone feature yet, and they say they will have that in their
   next version.

I forgot to say one thing. Since I bought mine in Japan, it came up with
Japanese Window95 with lots of Japanese application software. Also, I bought
mine for 180,000 Yen, that's US$1,682. Can someone comment on the fact that
whether this was a good buy.

Sorry for dumping on lots of questions at once, but, this e-mail mailing list
is the last resource to get helps before facing the IBM tech people who have
reputation to drag time and service. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Regards,
