Re: Dial-Up Networking for TP701CS

"...I'm trying to use Win95's Dial-Up Networking tool to connect my
TP701CS to an internet service provider (a2i). The IBM internal modem
dials the ISP, verifies the user name and password, but fails after
printing the following message:
Dial-up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network
protocols you specified in the Server Type settings. Check your
network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection
again.
I get exactly the same message on a 3Com modem, so it doesn't seem
like an IBM modem problem...."

i saw the exact same thing on three 755cd's and a cse. it was a win95 registry
problem, not a network configuration one. i paid 35 helpware dollars to ibm
(after several hours of tracking down someone willing to take my money) for an
incomplete set of instructions on how to fix it. i had to fill in a few blanks
to get it to work, but this is basically it:

1) make sure you've done the bios upgrade, thinkpad utility (v3.10 or better)
upgrade & mwave upgrade.

2) boot to cmos & reinitialize the system board.

3) open 'infrared' icon & make sure it's disabled.

4) open 'serial' icon & make sure serial port b is disabled, & that serial
port a is enabled on com1.

5) open 'dsp' icon & make sure dsp is enabled & telephony is set to com2.

6) in device manager, remove all communications ports (com and lpt) from all
configurations and *do not* reboot. also, remove everything under 'modem' from
all configurations.

7) shut down, power off & reboot. when it finds a new device check 'install
windows default driver.'

the 701 may work at this point. i don't know them very well. if you have an
infrared port, you'll probably need to continue. now, in device manager, if
you have two ports listed as 'communications port,' apply step 8 to the second
one. if you only have one listed as 'communications port,' apply step 8 to it.

8) click once on 'communications port' under 'ports' in device manager. click
on 'properties' and go to the device manager tab. click on 'change driver'
then select 'show all devices.' on the left, choose 'ibm' and on the right
choose 'ibm thinkpad infrared port.' click 'ok' & let it reboot.

9) in control panel, add new hardware. don't let it search, choose 'ports,'
then on the left choose 'standard port types' and on the right choose
'communications port' (should be the default). click next & the i/o range
should read '02F8-02FF' and the irq should read '03.' (if not, cancel out,
remove the 'infrared' port from device manager, reboot & go back & apply step 8
to the other 'communications port.'). *do not* reboot.

10) make sure no ports in device manager have a red x or a yellow '!' if any
do, go to their properties and make sure the 'current' configuration is
checked. shut down, power off & reboot.

this got me through four machines successfully. hope it helps.
