re: heat dissipation
"I find the high temperature of my 755cx somewhat alarming and
it sounds like it might be worse with the 760. I had thought
the purpose of the feet was (a) to tilt the keyboard and (b) to
provide airflow under the machine for cooling. The 760 has
a tilt mechanism under the keyboard itself and got rid of the feet,
so I thought they had somehow made it run cooler."
What air flow? there is no fan here. Air is a pretty good
insulator, dependeing on the surface you put it on, you
probably do better with the feet not used, from a cooling
point of view.
With the feet up, as the air underneath the machine gets warm,
it can escape around the sides of the machine taking the heat with it.
Putting the computer on top of a soft, insulating surface such
as a sleeping bag makes it run a LOT hotter.
I think the 760CD and 755CX are pretty similar, having used both, in
terms of heat. It is true that it gets quite hot, this is intended as
part of the design I guess.
It is scary and makes me fear for the computer's long term reliability.
I'd be afraid to leave it in unattended 24*7 operation, for example.
