My bet is that the jack that connects with the ThinkPad is not seated
properly. If you flip the keyboard up there is a blue switch which locks
down the floppy drive. When this is pushed all the way to the left it
pops out the phone jack. I have found that having the phone cord still
connected and applying a gentle tug will help pull the jack free. Then
place it back into its slot and make sure it is seated properly. This
worked when my 755CX was new and had a similar problem. Since then I
have configured 755CX with WIN95 and have gotten the modems to run at
28.8 just fine. Good luck.
