Linux and internal modem/SCSI DAT drive

I have a Thinkpad 755CE which has an internal modem. I have
installed Linux on the system (Slackware with kernel 1.2.13)
and so far everything works find. How can I access the
built-in modem? Do I need to create a special device file,
rebuild the kernel with a special option, install a module,
or what?

I also have a Bus Toaster PCMCIA card. Linux is able to access
my CD-ROM drive but I'm having trouble getting it to recognize
my 4mm DAT drive. Anyone got any tips for me? I suspect it's
a kernel configuration problem.

Many thanks in advance for any help..

Alan.
