If you don't mind the modifications made to the machine for the Japanese
market, I might suggest that you look for the 760ED and 560 in Japan. I
have seen the 560 in a large number of stores here, and although I have not
looked specifically, I believe that 760ED is also available at several
stores here. I am not sure of the reason for it (perhaps it is because
Japan is a more competitive market for state-of-the-art desktops and
notebooks), but it does appear that stores in Japan have a lot of the new
IBM products in stock before they appear on the shelves in the U.S. In
addition, you can find some IBM products here that don't exist in the
U.S.--the best example I can think of is the IBM 4x PCMCIA CD-Rom Drive,
which IBM released in the U.S. on June 23rd (according to the IBM press
release on the internet). This Portable CD-Rom Drive was available for sale
in Japan as early as April of this year!
