Etherlink III cable change problem

A week ago, I said that I need to reboot my Thinkpad 755CX with 3com
Etherlink III PC card (Combo) running OS/2 WARP Connect if I move one
LAN to another. I thought that this was strange, because some people
had already mentioned that they carry their hibernated thinkpads from
one place to another and their LAN connections at multiple places just
work file. Today, I finally found a simple cause for my problem. The
two LANs, to which I am connecting my machine, use different types of
cables. One of them uses coax cables and the other uses TP cables.

After waiting for 35 minutes on the phone, I finally reached a
technical support guy at 3com and explained the situation. Then The
guy said "It is normal. What you have to do is JUST reboot your
machine." I repeatedly tried to explain why I am concerned with this
feature, but he did not understand my point. His final comment was
that I should talk with the marketing department responsible for the
future product feature improvement.

The only useful information I got in the phone call was that the 3com
drivers only check the connected transceiver at the boot time. When
the card service tells the drive to reinitialize the network card, the
driver uses the previously obtained information about the transceiver
instead of checking it again. The tech guy could not explain why the
driver was designed in this way.
