microphone on Thinkpaad 755CX

I am having a devil of  a time getting acceptable performance from the
microphone on my 755 CX especially with net phone products like WebPhone or
IPhone. Even an external mic needs to have the control set to maximum for
anywhere hear audible sound.

Any suggestions for how to get a higher gain out of the microphone??
