I've found that the easyserv repair dep't will very often replace things
that the tech support people at the 800 number say they will not replace.
So if you're sending in your thinkpad on an easyserv to repair a keyboard
or something like that.  It's a good idea to leave a note in the box with
the computer with the battery stating that itdoesn't accept a charge
anymore. 
Once I was trying to get IBM to replace my screen which had cracked
diagonally down the middle. (don't ask how it happened - i was very
careless).  Anyway I finally convinced the 800 people that they take in
the computer to have a look at it and they would only  fix it if they
could see that it was not my fault.  The guy on the phone sounded like
there would be no chance they would fix it.  What happened: I got the
thinkpad back two days later with a new screen!  I'm pretty sure that the
easyserv people just fixed it anyway even though  it didn't fit in their
warranty guidelines.
