assuming you've wiped out your autoexec.bat  & config.sys, and enabled pcmcia 
support, i've seen this same problem on a two thinkpads.  i was able to 
pinpoint it to a resource conflict & the simple solution was to go into device 
manager & disable (not remove) the ide controller.  after that, the cards came 
right up.  don't ask my why changing the resources on the ide controller didn't 
work, it just didn't.  "all this science, i don't understand.  it's just my job 
five days a week."
