Included below is my answer from July (which includes another answer

XV modifies the colormap to best fit the picture.  Netscape takes over
the colormap, but uses the same map (some standard distribution of the
entire color space) for all pictures.  It's pathetic.  Lots of people
have complained about this, but Netscape doesn't seem to want to fix
it.  The reason is supposed to be because Netscape might have to
display more than one picture at a time.
