Linux sound on "old" 755c

I am in the process of upgrading to Linux 2.0.x on a 755c.  
I have tried WITHOUT success to build several kernels to 
enable sound.  I used the info
   io  4E30
   irq 10
   dma 0 (and 1)
which I read in the user's manual and tried kernels with
soundblaster amd microsoft sound system enabled.  As I 
said, these did not work.

I read in a very old FAQ that someone had gotten sound to work
on a 750 so I assume it is possible on a 755c.

Has anyone gotten Linux sound to work on a 755c?  If so, what
configuration did you use in the linux/drivers/sound section?
