Help: Redhat Linux Installation on TP755CX/24meg/810M
I just bought the Red Hat Linux 3.03, march '96 CDs two weeks ago.
I've spent the obligatory 20 hours of getting the CD-ROM recognized,
multiple re-installing, re-reading the user guide, Linux Unleashed and FAQs,
re-partitioning the harddisk, and even getting
the system up (for a while) on a 180 Meg drive, with MetroX running
at 640 x 480 x 256. So, I bought a couple of bigger hard drives
and haven't had a successful installation on my TP755CX, 24 Meg,
810 Meg toshiba drive. If you have any experience and wish to help,
read on.
The first time I installed on the 810 Meg drive, it completed but
the file system was read only
and without an /etc/inittab. It was unable to do very much at the
#bash prompt except complain about the file system being read only.
The second attempt I tried to follow the redhat user guide recommendations
regarding partitioning to the letter. Unfortuneately, cfdisk would only
allow me 4 partitions. No more.
Q: What is the difference between primary and logical types and which
do I need for "/", "/usr" , "/home" etc?
So, I setup:
/dev/hda1 primary DOS 79 meg /dos
/dev/hda5 logical Linux swap 29 meg
/dev/hda3 primary Linux 30 meg /
/dev/hda4 primary Linux 637 meg /usr
That's all I could partition. After 90 minutes of package unloading,
I went thru to the re-boot and got:
Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 3/1): ext2_read_inode: unable
to read i-node block - inode=24193, block=98310
What should I try next? TIA
-Joe
PS I have reviewed Linux on the Thinkpad FAQ but its hard to figure
out exactly what's applicable and what's not given the dates of
software revs, the relationship to redhat, and configuration
nuances.
Q: What kind of responsiveness have people experienced with the
Red Hat Support team? My current ticket is over a week old and
I'm still waiting.
