Reducing display power?

Yesterday evening I had occasion to use my 760E in a dark room, and
was attempting to generate as little light as possible. I was rather
surprised to discover that a screenful of black generates
significantly more light than a screen that's *off*, even with the
brightness all the way down.

Is there some way to reduce the ambient brightness even more?
Is this even physically possible without hardware mods?
