Mwave Modem - dialtone recognition ???

I have a new (to me) 760C, running Win95, with the MWave modem. The
modem works fine on a conventional analog line such as at my home, but
I m having difficulty with it at work. I have an analog line, coming
from an SRX pbx system, and the MWave modem will not recognize the
initial dial tone. The line has a higher pitched dial tone when you first
go off hook. After a 9 is dialed, to reach an outside line, the
dialtone drops to the conventional tone. The MWave modem will not
dial any digits that are entered, as it does not recognize the initial
dial tone as being valid. I only get an error message saying that no
dialtone was detected, and to ensure the modem is plugged in . . .
yada, yada, yada.

I normally use a Hayes Optima 288 PCMCIA, and a USR Courier on this
same line without any grief. I have looked through the online
documentation for the MWave, and I cannot find any AT command settings
that will force the modem to dial the initial 9 to get the
conventional tone, or to just ignore the tone, an dial blindly. I
have upgraded to all the latestbios and drivers, from the IBM web site, for
MWave, and everything else. I have also applied Service Pack 1,
and all the Win95 patches eleased since service pack 1, as posted on
the Microsoft Win95 web site. None of these upgrades affected the
MWave modem's ability to detect my pbx's dial tone, although they did
solve another anomaly I was experiencing with dial up networking not
remembering my password. Any input into solving this one is greatly
appreciated.
