Are the preload CDs only available for the ThinkPad models with built-in 
CDROM drives? I have a 701C and an external PC-Card CDROM drive, and I 
shouldn't mind getting one if they're available for the 701C.

Do you have the part number available for that? Or alternatively, is a 
description of it to be found somewhere on ibm.com?

The IBM repair facility reinstalled the pre-loaded software on a friend's
CD-less ThinkPad (upon his written request while getting something else
repaired), so at least from their perspective the "licenses" for the OS
and apps are inherently in the ThinkPad...an "in portu" theory, I suppose.
