Nope, I agree completely.
Not sure what the solution is, but my feeling is that, apart from the few
that really don't understand, spammers are scum, and even the most
reasonable, gentle requests to go away will fall on deaf ears.
I've given up until I can find a suitable technical solution :)
As far as the list goes, there's moderation (I doubt anyone really wants
that) and blocking non-subscribers (which I wouldn't be opposed to, but is
problematical).
