I beat my head against the wall for a couple of weeks trying to figure out
why I could connect to everywhere BUT my office network through the Win95
PPP dialup to my ISP. I could get to the office machines just fine when on
the ethernet at work, just not when I was dialing up to my ISP. My ethernet
card was set to a static IP addr, my dialup to a dynamic IP addr
(controlpanel->network, look for the two seperate TCPIP items.)
The problem is that Win95 is just bright enough to be a pain in the butt.
I found that everything works fine if my ethernet card is REMOVED from my
'pad before dialing to my ISP -- I can connect to the office ethernet and
all that stuff. It appears that Win95 sees that the ethernet card is in the
machine (config'd for the office LAN), so it sends all packets for that IP
range to the ethernet card. It doesn't seem to check to see if the card is
actually connected to anything.
I imagine this is probably your problem; try booting the laptops without
your ethernet cards and see if it fixes it. (This is an additional reason
why I'll never buy a combo ethernet/modem card)
