I was intrigued by the snippets I read here about upgrading my
ThinkPad Mwave modem (760CD) to 33.6Kb, so I thought I'd try
it myself (I say "snippets" because, for some reason, I missed
the beginning of the thread). I hope my experience last night
can shed some light for other's here.
For those who wondered, I pulled the update off of Watson at:
http://watson.mbb.sfu.ca/software/software.html
The upgrade for this isn't at watson, however, it's only referenced
there and can be found at:
http://www.netcnct.net/business/6bit/links/index.html
It's called "33k6up.exe".
After downloading it and letting it expand, I found a readme that
was written in, I think, German. So, I decided to click on what turns
out to be the installation utility, 336.exe. Unfortunately, that
utility only allows you to update a dynalink card, and exited.
So, I used the supplied "expand.exe" utility to expand the many
files into one temp directory, and went to work. . .
In short, while I can't say now *exactly* what I did to get it working,
I essentially replaced all my current files in the c:\mww\modem
with the new files from this upgrade. (In some cases you need to
shut down mwave since they're being accessed and can't be overwritten).
That didn't really do it all though, and I had to visually compare
the *.tap and *.hap files (which appear to be, essentially, "ini"
files) and update my ini files to suit -- there wasn't, in all,
very much I had to update as most of the entries were identical
to my current ini configs. Last, I used "Add New Hardware" on my
Win95 system to install the supplied drivers (the update contains
an inf file named "mwmdm410.inf" that I pointed "Add New Hardware"
to after telling it I wanted to specify a new modem; I replied
"no" to the "search for new hardware" question, and replied "no"
for "detect new modem." I then told it to look for a new driver
and pointed it at "mwmdm410.inf"). The new driver came up as
"Mwave 33.6 Data Fax VOD Modem", and I let Win95 install it.
Once finished, I rebooted, and the new mwave modem utility came
up and identified it as a 33600 modem! Nifty. (Dev Manager,
however, still thinks it's a 28800 modem. Any thoughts on that?)
This morning I logged into my ISP, Primenet, and connected at
21.4kbps, or so. Not what I'd hoped for.
So, a while ago, I downloaded the V34.dsp fix from watson, version 2.36,
since the V34.dsp file I'd just installed in this upgrade was version 2.25,
and, in general, I'm a believer in "newer is better."
That done, I logged into Primenet again, and Win95 told me I was
connected at 56KBPS! Probably not, but something good was happening.
The Mwave Modem program told me I connected at 33.6, but then dropped
it down to 31.2, where it stayed (and still is). I roughly tested the
speed by downloading some files, and routinely achieved around 3.0kbps
transfers, with some hitting 4.2kbps. Hardly scientific, but pretty
good performance.
I hope this admittedly-rambling experience helps others. So far, it seems
the upgrade works pretty well.
Got to run, I'm VERY late. . . ;-)
