Why should it? It does. The UltraBay uses a second IDE controller, commonly strapped to IRQ 15 (the primary is usually at IRQ 14). Thus, when your ThinkPad has two hard drives inside it, both drives are masters on the primary and secondary IDE controllers The reason for this is probably historical: I suspect that the slave position on the primary controller is allocated to the IDE drive in the optional docking stations, which predate the UltraBay in the 760 line.
