HOW TO: TP/Zip/CDROM (Part 2)
ThinkPad 750C -- Iomega ZIP drive -- Panasonic KXL-D720 CD-ROM
Part 2. Getting your system to talk to the two SCSI devices.
============================================================
Although I have the two devices connected and working, I'm not happy with
the arrangement. First, the background: I have MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 running on my ThinkPad 750C; the HD is a tiny 340 Mb one,
but it's what can be afforded at the moment; the 16 Mb card gives me a
total of 20 Mb.
If, contrary to the set up which I described in Part 1 of this message,
I have only one SCSI device hooked up (either the Zip drive or the
CD-ROM), everything works perfectly. No problems with the Panasonic,
as one would expect, since card and drive were made for one another.
The Zip drive also works fine, with GUEST.EXE working without any
complaining. So far so good.
As soon as I hook up the two SCSIs together, trouble starts. GUEST.EXE
no longer works (I have tried different alternatives in the GUEST.INI
file, without much success). The system either hangs, or just refuses
to give me a letter for the Zip drive. The funny thing is that, although
useless, the Zip drive does not stop the ThinkPad from reaching the
CD-ROM!... Any suggestions from those more knowledgeable in these things
would be greatly appreciated.
I have found a way around this problem, however. If I load
DEVICE=C:\iomega\SCSICFG.EXE
DEVICE=C:\iomega\SCSIDRVR.SYS
in my CONFIG.SYS, then I have access to both Zip (drive D:) and CD-ROM
(drive E:)... The problem with this situation is that my memory seems to
disappear into limbo!... I can load, say, my word processor, but nothing
else - it is not the fault of the word processor, since the same happens
if I load anything else. Basically I am limited to ONE application...
Considering that I have 20 MB of RAM, this is a little silly... I
suspect that the culprit is some of the sofware that comes with the
Zip drive (Tools, etc), but I cannot be sure. So far I have tried a
number of different alternatives, but without much success. The bottom
line, then, is that I have access to both Zip and CD-ROM at the expense
of being able to run only one program at a time. Of course this means
that in most cases (when I don't need to access either of the SCSI
devices) I simply do not load support for them... If you have any
suggestions to improve this situation, I would be very grateful.
In spite of the limitations, I hope this will be useful.
