Here's a long shot: do you have a PCMCIA card installed when you're
trying to do the swap? I've heard that some PCMCIA cards do not get
turned off when the machine goes into suspend, and if they draw enough
power, they'll drain the backup lithium battery before you get a chance
to install the main replacement battery.
