"... help on what I need to do, if anything, before just attaching the port replicator to the back of the TP and plugging the monitor cable in. ..." ~~~~~ just turn it off first, and that's just for the port replicator, not the monitor. the video should come right up on both screens when you reboot. if not, one of the function keys (function + f7 on my 755cd, not sure which on a 701) is a toggle between 1) tp screen only, 2) external monitor only, and 3) both screen & monitor. toggle around until you get video on the monitor. there's no other setup required.
