1) Don't count on checked or shipped packages not getting x-rayed.
2) back up your hard drive.
3) The potential for permanent damage is to the chips in your computer.
The chances of a problem are slight, but the damage is cumulative. There is
more reason to worry if you are flying every week.
4) In the US, at least, you can generally request hand inspection. They will
make you turn the computer on. Half the time they make you take it out and
turn it on even if you do send it through the scanner.
