RE: CPU Upgrades for TP 750

The following info was about to be posted...then I thought ...maybe???

http://195.100.109.161/scripts/corporate/upg3.asp

It appears these folks have spend the money to do the Glue chip design and
debugging. Pretty impressive...the work that is ,Not the result . $600 ???Ouch !!
Quoting Landmark's "Speed"is very sad and meaningless.
Visit Gainberry Web page for a much more "real" benchmark .
I think the numbers were 20% better ?? Site is down again or I'd
post it.

Original Post ;-} Note the error.....(grin)

Sigh...NO IT CAN NOT BE UPGRADED !!
The 755's, even the 750CE, the 360's can be upgraded.
These all use a 486 SX or DX for which an upgrade path exists. Mind you it's ugly ;-}
The original 750's use the ill fated 486SL which is the same as a 486DX BUT:
The pinout is not the same...at all.
The 486 SL includes memory controller, a complete ISA Bus and a few
other widgets.....
While it is feasible to set up a AMD 486-133 with a LOT of glue logic (gate arrays )
and try to make it all work ; I can't see anyone bothering.
The actuall performance improvement isn't fantastic.

BTW you can buy a brand new Toshiba 400 Pent-75, color dual scan etc for $900
this is with 3 year warrany from Insight.
Or $1250 gets you a new Thinkpad 365XD pent-120, Cdrom ,Active display etc...
So why spend $400+ on an out of warrany TP that will STILL be much slower than
anything with a pentium inside.

..peter.. who loves his TP 360CE ,TP730T (very strange beast) and will soon have a TP750Pen

The TP 750 cpu can be upgraded to an AMD 133mhz. I saw this on Corporate
Upgrades web page.
