Hello Paul... Which kernal are you running? I've got 2.0.29 on my thinkpad 701-cs (Same as yours) and have no problems with any of these functions. (althought the only apmish type things I do are fn-f4!) Sound pcmcia x all work fine. So my suggestion is too check your verision!
