It seems that you are confusing your needs with the needs of the 
others who may or may not have similar requirements.

There is the problem - "a couple of people" = limited market. If you 
want to create a stripped down laptop with no bells and whistles, go 
for it - but beware that the market may not support it. If it does 
great! - you will have proven the big boys wrong. You may find that 
there is a market but that it is too small to keep prices down and 
still make a reasonable profit.
